From A Former Prosecutor

What are the potential consequences of violating parole?

On Behalf of | Oct 13, 2023 | Criminal Defense

Parole is a form of release sometimes granted to inmates who have served part of their prison sentences. It allows them to reintegrate into society under strict conditions and tight supervision.

Despite the freedom that parole offers, violations can lead to harsh consequences. Any former inmate on parole should be aware of the repercussions that might result from breaking the rules.

Return to prison

The worst outcome of a parole violation is reincarceration. When someone steps out of line, parole officers usually issue an arrest warrant. Subsequently, the former inmate may have to serve the rest of their original prison sentence. This happens more often than many think. One report claims that 45% of state prison admissions are due to parole and probation violations.

Extended supervision

Sometimes, a parolee may dodge returning to prison but face an extended parole period. Suspension of plans to move, remove an ankle monitor or live with someone may be necessary.

Stricter parole conditions

The rules for staying on parole may become more stringent. This could involve tighter curfews, more frequent check-ins with supervisory officers, mandatory drug testing or participation in rehabilitative programs.

Strained relationships

Parole violations often make it more challenging to maintain relationships due to restrictions. Parents, friends and romantic interests may become disillusioned or distant, making the journey toward rehabilitation and societal reintegration more difficult. In contrast, showing that one is staying on a positive path helps strengthen these cherished connections.

Parolees must take their obligations seriously and follow every condition religiously. Getting their lives back depends on it.
