Can coffee make you sober?

On Behalf of | Apr 7, 2022 | Drunk Driving

If you’ve been drinking and you want to get sober so that you can drive home, you may decide to order a cup of coffee. People often say that a nice cup of coffee can make you feel sober, so they’ll recommend it as a tactic for driving home safely and avoiding a DUI.

Does this really work? Or is this just a myth that has been repeated so many times that people no longer realize that it is a myth?

Nothing but time eliminates alcohol

Drinking a cup of coffee can make you feel more awake. But it doesn’t eliminate the alcohol that’s already in your system, that is already in your bloodstream. Nothing can do that except for time. Your body just needs time to metabolize the alcohol, which can take hours. Adding coffee to the mix can make you feel alert, but it’s not actually going to make you any soberer than you were before.

In fact, a lot of the things you hear are simply myths. For instance, maybe you’ve heard that taking a cold shower will help you feel sober. Once again, this can do wonders for making you feel awake and alert because it is a shock to your system, but you’re still just as impaired as you were before. The cold shower also does not remove any of the alcohol from your system.

Are you facing legal charges?

If you got pulled over while you were trying to drive home and you’re now facing some serious DUI charges, make sure you understand your legal defense options.
